I was perusing wonderfulness at the Fremont Vintage Mall near my house, shopping for decor pieces for summer weddings, when I came across these two young lovebirds. I'm so happy I took the risk of introducing myself and nosing into their business ;) They were super open to sharing their love story after hearing I was a wedding planner and had the Real Street Love feature on my blog. Here's a snippet of their love story, set so perfectly in context of our social media 'times':
Me: How did you meet?
Angelo: We met on Instagram. A friend posted a picture of me when I first started [on Instagram] and said "go follow this guy". The guy had like 700 followers so we figured it'd get me started. Out of all of them, though, only one followed me and it was Haley... a little embarrassing but she was so cute that I just followed her back. Then she found me on Facebook and we started talking. After 6 months, she flew down to meet me. We met in-person at the Palm Springs aiport in California.
Haley: He brought me flowers and brought his friend (just in case) [laughs].
Angelo: Just in case it was scary and weird, it was like 'your not creepy, I'm not creepy... let's get that out of the way'.
Haley: Time went by so fast. That first time, I remember it like it was yesterday...
Angelo: It will actually be our 22 months on the 9th, so almost 2 years. Tomorrow!
Me: So you two met through Instagram and then you [Angelo] moved up here?
Angelo: I moved up here a month ago.
Me: And Haley, you're from Vancouver?
Haley: Yeah, I live in Vancouver, Canada.
Me: Oh! So you guys are visiting Seattle!
Angelo: Yep. Our relationship has been long distance. She would come down to California and stay for the period of a week every other month or so.
Me: In Palm Springs?
Angelo: Well I lived in a place called Hemet. It's an hour from Palm Springs, right in the middle of the desert. Shitty little town [laughs]. Then I moved to Bellingham a month ago to close that gap. I actually work at Starbucks so I transferred stores and am enrolling in school. Hopefully I'll be in Canada soon.
Me: So you're [Haley] staying in Vancouver. What do you do there?
Haley: I go to school three days a week for aesthetics and spa therapy. The rest of the time I'm in Bellingham spending my time with Angelo, hiking and things...
Me: So, your celebrating 22 months now. This is incredible. It seems so awesome to take that risk, you know? What's beautiful about it is people lose touch with being able to take a risk. Like that whole thing that you don't really know what you can do until you do it. It's so scary but then, what would have happened if you'd limited yourself and hadn't done it?
Angelo: I had talked with my parents about that a lot and one of the big things that my dad told me before I moved up here... They were hesitant about me moving, you know I had lived with them my entire life. Um... and he... and one night he sat me down and said, 'if you love this girl and you want to spend the rest of your life with her, don't do something you'll regret. Go for it. If you have everything lined out, you should go for it'. And so I bought a plane ticket. I found some roommates on Craigslist. And we're going for it.
Me: That is so awesome.
Haley: It's the best decision, it's been great.
Me: Wait, you guys are in your twenties.
Haley and Angelo: We're 20.
Angelo: Yeah... pretty young. We've been talking about marriage for the last year, believe it or not. She's just waiting for me to propose [smiles]. I can't afford a ring still... working on it ;)
